KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS ON THE ROAD

Welcome to Auriga Fleet, managing risk in compliance with health and safety legislation is a vital for any business to avoid unnecessary fines and claims. Monitoring driver behaviour and providing driver training is a safety critical aspect of this risk management

Overseeing a Single fleet of vehicles means managing a great number of moving parts – a crucial element often over looked is risk assessment and management

Maybe you have a sales team, regional managers, service engineers, delivery drivers or even staff using their own cars for business journeys.

Driving is often seen as a consequence of a job rather than a safety-critical aspect, yet it is well-established as one of the highest risk activities that most employees will ever undertake. Failure to manage that risk doesn’t just put drivers and other road users at risk. It can put directors and senior managers, reputations – even the business itself at risk.

Roads kill ten to fifteen times more people than workplaces and at least a quarter of road related accidents are work-related. Yet 79% of SME’s do not think that the road is a workplace or that the health and safety regulations apply.

It is a company’s legal, social and moral responsibility to manage these risks properly.

What are your legal obligations?

Companies and their directors face severe penalties under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 with sentence ranging from £180K to £20M depending on the size of the business and imprisonment for the directors responsible. Under Road Traffic Legislation Directors may face disqualification due to offences committed by their employees and significant costs in replacing drivers who have been disqualified.

In order to comply with this legislation your business must:

▶ Not do anything that puts drivers at risk
▶ Not endanger other road users by work related driving activities
▶ Have appropriate policies and procedure in place to ensure this
▶ Ensure that employees always follow those policies and procedures
